TikTok vows legal challenge to potential US app ban
TikTok plans to challenge potential legislation leading to a nationwide ban of the app if passed by Congress. The House of Representatives recently approved an aid package containing provisions that could result in the ban. TikTok’s head of public policy for the Americas, Michael Beckerman, sent an internal memo to employees warning them about the situation. The memo stated that TikTok would pursue a legal challenge if the bill is signed into law. The legislation proposes forcing TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app within 270 days or make it illegal for US app stores to offer TikTok for downloads. The bill also gives President Joe Biden the option to extend the deadline for another 90 days. TikTok argues that the bill infringes on users’ First Amendment rights.
